The Bentley Boys have been compiling a monthly first dance chart since July 2024, based on our couples’ actual first dance requests (Check out our Instagram @bentleyboysband for our monthly charts and some great first dance inspiration). One song that consistently appears near the top is Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, featuring in our Top 3 most requested first dances in most months.
So what makes it such a great first dance song?
The song itself is practically a cultural institution. Since Frankie Valli first released it in 1967, it has appeared in countless movies and TV shows, including the famous scene in 'Ten Things I Hate About You' where Heath Ledger interrupts Julia Stiles' soccer practice with his charming rendition. It has also been covered by an extraordinary range of artists, including Andy Williams, Engelbert Humperdinck, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Temptations, Julio Iglesias, Gloria Gaynor, Manic Street Preachers and Lauryn Hill.
As a result, it’s one of those rare songs that almost everyone seems to know. It crosses generations effortlessly. It’s a classic without feeling dated.

Those are the credentials of a great song. But what exactly makes it such a popular first dance?
From a songwriting point of view, it is pure genius. The opening line, “You’re just too good to be true,” is a hook that grabs you right out of the gate and never lets go. The smooth, romantic opening gradually builds in emotional intensity before the horns and rhythm section arrive and everything changes. Frankie Valli’s passionate vocal delivery convinces us that this isn’t just a passing crush—it’s the real thing.
But where the song really delivers as a first dance favourite is in what happens next.
We’ve performed at thousands of weddings over the years, and one of the challenges with a traditional slow first dance is what happens when the couple have had their moment. Everyone is watching, but at some point you need to get from first dance to party.
“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” does that for you.
The restrained opening gives the couple space to have that intimate first dance moment together. Then the brass starts to build. Everyone in the room knows what’s coming. And when that huge, familiar chorus finally arrives, the atmosphere changes completely. Suddenly it’s no longer just a romantic song being watched by a room full of guests—it becomes a celebration that everyone wants to be part of.
That gives couples a perfect opportunity to bring everyone else onto the dance floor. They can enjoy the opening section on their own and then, when the chorus lands, invite the bridal party or all their guests to join them.
From our experience, that transition can be fantastic at a wedding. The first dance simply becomes the start of the party. And perhaps that’s the secret to the song’s enduring popularity.
“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” has all the romance you want from a first dance—and all the energy you need to fill a dance floor. Judging by our couples’ requests, we don’t anticipate its popularity fading anytime soon.
